Prescription Pills Celebrities Portraits

Artists like Courtney Love and Kelly Osbourne fought with their drug addictions for a long time, while Michael Jackson and Heath Ledger lost their lives because of them. By creating their portraits out of pills, Mecier tries to emphasize the dangers of drug abuse.

Jason Mecier’s pill-portraits will be a part of his Celebrity Junk Drawer show, held at the Ghettogloss Gallery, in Los Angeles, on March 17.

Portraits made out of used joint filters

An artist from Pittsburgh named Cliff Maynard, that’s also a tattoo artist, is making portraits by using marijuana joint ends. The portraits are of famous people like Bob Marley, Snoop Dog and John Lennon, to mention a few.

Photorealism is a movement which began in the late 1960′s, in which scenes are painted in a style closely resembling photographs. The subject matter is frequently banal and without particular interest; the true subject of a photorealist work is the way in which we interpret photographs and paintings in order to create an internal representation of the scene depicted.

Worker and Kolkhoz Woman

This monument called Worker and Kolkhoz Woman (Rabochiy i Kolkhoznitsa) was made for one of studios in VDNKH and first time displayed in Paris in 1937. There was hold a competition for the post of a chief architect and one of the famous Soviet architects at that time, V. I. Mukhina, won the contest. The memorial of an impressive size was created. But while transporting the statue from France to Russia after the exhibition it was heavily damaged.

The Worker and Kolkhoz Woman artwork is 25 meters high (300 feet) and it was made from pure bronze. It shows us how two people, man and woman, stand together shoulder to shoulder and rear an insignia of the USSR high in their hands. These two symbolize masters of the Soviet land – the working class and Kolkhoz farmers.

After the accident, monument was modernized and proudly placed standing on one of the studios. And it stood like that till 1979 when it was modernized one more time. Because the symbol of the country needs to be tidy all the time.

Some years later, when times of the Soviet Union had passed, it was standing there and nobody cared about it much. So it began to look tackier and tackier till in the beginning of second millennium it became looking really time-worn and run-down. And only then the authorities started to tackle this problem.

The statue was in a critical state, so it was demolished very quickly and repeatedly sent on a new, and this time thorough modernization. Now the monument is being rehabilitated and the authorities of Moscow are building new pedestal for it. This time engineers decided to use a fortified and stainless steel for the monument and it doesn’t look bad at all. Moscow state authorities promised that the statue will be standing there looking as good as new already at the end of 2009, in December.

Fat Donald – Illustration Art

Fat Donald by ~DonMak is dark, repulsive and intentionally so. It may not be a most balanced portrayal of good ol’ Ronnie but it runs with the current zeitgeist and expresses it very well. So it marks a point in time where there is a global phenomenon in which we are all worrying about our food, becoming more and more suspicious of convenience. It really does hit my funny bone.

Paint Drop Sculptures

When we came across these ‘Paint Drop Sculptures ‘ we were really impressed by it and we were sure you too would like it. These sculptures are the creation of Chris Dorosz. He maintains a studio practice in San Francisco where he teaches at the Academy of Art University. Apart from this he also runs the studio, affordable studio space for artists in the city.
Artist’s Statement:
“Out of material discovery I began to regard the primacy of the paint drop, a form that takes shape not from a brush or any human-made implement or gesture, but purely from its own viscosity and the air it falls through………….”
